It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of The Honorable John Horton

McDermid, a distinguished former Member of Parliament, respected community leader, and lifelong Lorne Scot.

John was first elected as the Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Brampton—Georgetown in 1979 and he served with distinction, representing his constituents with unwavering dedication until 1993. From 1985 until 1993 John held several key positions while serving in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. It was during this time that he made an immeasurable contribution to the Lorne Scots when he convinced his cabinet colleagues to approve the construction of the Regiment’s new Armoury in Georgetown.

Following his retirement from politics, John continued to serve his community through active involvement in community organizations and through the Lorne Scots. He was appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment in June 2000 and Honorary Colonel in February 2005, an appointment he held until 2011.

John will be remembered for his great sense of humour, and his passion for public service. His legacy of leadership and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Former Honorary Colonel Gary Reamey wrote this outline of Johns' life and career.

The Honorable John Horton McDermid, PC March 17, 1940 - December 6,2024 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of The Honorable John Horton McDermid, a distinguished former Member of Parliament and respected community leader, on December 6th, 2024. Born on March 17, 1940, in Hamilton, Ontario, John dedicated his life to public service and the betterment of his community. John's career in politics began in 1979 when he was elected as the Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Brampton—Georgetown. He served with distinction, representing his constituents with unwavering dedication until 1993. During his tenure, John held several key positions while serving in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, including Minister of State for Housing, International Trade, Privatization and Regulatory Affairs, and Finance and Privatization. His contributions to Canadian politics were marked by his commitment to public service and his ability to navigate complex political landscapes with integrity and grace. His professional achievements were complemented by his active involvement in the community, where he was a beloved figure known for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity. John was deeply involved in various community organizations and initiatives in Brampton. He was a dedicated member of the United Church of Canada and actively supported local charities and non-profit organizations. His efforts in promoting community development and supporting local businesses were widely recognized and appreciated. John also played a significant role in advocating for affordable housing and improving public infrastructure in his constituency. Throughout his career, John received numerous awards and honours; the Queens Diamond and Platinum Jubilee and most recently the King Charles Il Medal reflecting his outstanding contributions to public service and the community. He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1988, a testament to his significant role in Canadian politics. Additionally, he was honored with the title of Fellow of the Real Estate Institute for his contributions to the real estate industry. John was very involved with Headwaters Healthcare Centre, where he served as Chairman of the Board and then served on the Foundation Board. Golf was John’s passion. He, like many of us was forever looking to lower his handicap which he consistently tried with his regular foursome that he played with at The Devils Pulpit. Never shy to offer advice on keeping your head down and don’t move your body!!! John filled his time after retiring after politics with his custom golf fitting business and at 1 point as President of the Club Makers Society! John also served as the Honorary Colonel of the Lorne Scot’s Regiment and was proud of his contributions to this long-standing reserve regiment. Thanks to Ancestry, John found a new family, including his birth mother, 7 siblings and nieces and nephews and that has been a real gift! He will be remembered fondly by his family, his many friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. John maintained good humour and resiliency thru his many health challenges over the last few years and was grateful for the exceptional care that he received over the years. A special thank you to Dr Alex McCallum, Dr Jeff McKinnon, and his wonderful PSWs Wali and Mary whom he just adored. A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville in John's memory. John's legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be rooting for the Jays and Leafs from up above! May he rest in peace.

A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Wed 18 Dec at Devils' Pulpit Golf Course, 3035 Escarpment Side Road, Caledon between 1:00 and 4:00 PM. Comments will be made at 2:00.
